In recent weeks a number of individuals have asked me, “What are you going to do during the summer now that classes are over?” Truth be told, I have an awesome plan for the summer. I will be working at Trinity full-time! As a part of the Masters of Divinity program I am required to complete an internship within a local church, and Trinity has graciously agreed to let me work here this summer.
The goal of this internship is to help polish some of the skills I will need to serve the church. So, this summer I will be working on preaching, adult education, worship planning, and pastoral care. I will post a sermon weekly on the church website along with a feedback form to give you the opportunity to tell me where I need to improve. For the education component, I will teach a six week study called “Theology on Tap” starting July 17 for individuals 21 and older. We will gather at a local pub and enjoy good beer and good conversation around some classic stories in the Old Testament. To deepen my understanding of pastoral care, I will be accompanying Pastor Jim or Pastor Eileen on their home visits and working for the funeral home with families in need of a minister. Finally, I will be assisting with worship planning to intentionally think through and craft our worship services so they are a meaningful experience.
I would like to ask for your feedback in this process. I am just beginning my journey in ministry and I am looking to this congregation to help reveal where I need to grow. Thank you for allowing me the chance to really test myself and for making this community a safe space to learn. I look forward to embarking on this experience with my Trinity family.
